Teaching an appreciation of food’s provenance is also key to Gia Piciotto, a mother who has started a grass roots campaign taking London’s schools by storm. The idea? To introduce ‘edible gardens’ to urban children who otherwise wouldn’t have a clue that organic gala apples aren’t grown in Waitrose polythene bags.

Transplanted from the US, Gia based the programme on a model in California where market gardens were introduced into schools with positive results. “When my son started nursery I was surprised at how many people did not seem worried about what their children ate,” she says. “The children in our programmes are learning to make healthy choices and not to waste.”
